AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR / KCIT) – COVID-19 vaccine effects can occur on breastfeeding mothers.
That’s what the InfantRisk Center for Health Sciences at the Tech University of Texas aims to find out.
“There was a lack of information, we hoped we could give it to them,” said Dr. Kaitlyn Krutz, a TTUHSC Child Risk Center researcher.
Dr. Krutz: Why did they ask about the effects of COVID-19 vaccines on breastfeeding mothers?
“We’ve only had this survey for about six weeks, we’ve had about 6,000 responses. So this was a phenomenal answer. That’s not so normal, ”said Dr. Krutz.
Dr. Krutz noted that the study found that breastfeeding mothers had very similar symptoms to the vaccine compared to mothers who did not breastfeed.
“But the big question for mothers is a little less clinical, a little more practical. So what they wanted to know was what my baby was going to do. If I get this throat vaccine, can it be harmful? “So what we found out about that is that about 93% of those mothers said their babies had no side effects, no symptoms after they were vaccinated.”
Dr. Krutz said the mothers who reported any symptoms were found to be mild.
“Things like their baby were more sleepy or a little more messy than usual, but we didn’t really find anything too disturbing,” said Dr. Krutz.
With what new mothers have, Dr. Krutch said they hope this test will give them some peace of mind.
“We try to do our best to support them by making the best decisions possible. It’s hard to do without any information. So we will give them everything we can, ”said Dr. Krutz.
Dr. Krutz said they could not know if the symptoms were due to the vaccine or if the mother had become ill because of the vaccine.
Thus, they can not say what caused these symptoms in the 7% who reported them.
