SAN ANTONIO – The era is coming to an end at Northeast Baptist Hospital on Village Drive, near 410 Rings. Last Friday, the hospital announced to its staff that it would close the maternity ward after sending the last children home on June 30.

The North Baptist has issued a statement, which reads in part:

“After careful consideration, we decided to integrate the labor and maternity ward at Northeast Baptist Hospital into an existing program offered at the nearby North Central Baptist Hospital. The transition will put our network in a better position to offer more specialized services in each location. It will allow the Northeastern Baptist Hospital to better focus on community-based services while providing maternity patients with more professional services for both mother and child, including North Central Baptist Hospital Level IV NICU, home obstetric disease. An inpatient program that provides patients with direct access to board-certified midwives 24/7, high-risk mothers, neonatal transport teams, and pediatrician care at our Baptist Children’s Hospital in the North Center. ”

Announcement:

In other words, all births and deliveries will now take place in the rapidly expanding services of the North Central Baptist Hospital.

Current and former employees say they were shocked by the move, a little upset.

“We have been there forever, the cornerstone of the community in that area. And now it will simply disappear. It ‘s like. “Oh, my dear,” said Kay Banus, a former lactation specialist who retired after contracting COVID-19.

According to Banus, he has worked in the northeast of at least 1,000 babies during his 16-year career there. She suspects that the slow services provided by COVID have played a role in Baptist’s new setup, but says she is proud of the small success of the small maternity unit.

“It simply came to our notice then. We had that wonderful NICU, which was very family-friendly when family NICUs were nothing. “We just had such a stable staff,” said Banus, an internationally accredited lactation consultant.

Announcement:

Some Mater care workers who have been in the job for 30 years: are likely to consider moving to a new Women in North Central location.
