IRS. Scams manipulate children’s tax credit
The Internal Revenue Service’s criminal investigation department warns taxpayers about child tax credit fraud, which criminals use to steal money and personal information.
When millions of American families began paying their child tax arrears in advance last week, criminals were already looking for innovative tactics to take advantage of involuntary victims, the IRS said.
The IRS does not contact taxpayers by email, text message or social media to request personal or financial information, even child tax credit information.
The IRS does not leave pre-registered, urgent or threatening messages.
Aggressive calls warning taxpayers about a lawsuit or arrest are fake.
The IRS will not call taxpayers asking for financial information or verification so they can obtain monthly child loan payments.
